NEW DELHI: 2020 has been an unexpected year. From the novel coronavirus outbreak to the death of Bollywood star Sushant Singh Rajput, the year was extremely turbulent so far.
As the people continue to practice social distancing, stay at home and working remotely, their Internet activity saw a huge spike. In a recent Google Search Trends for the month of June, death of the 34-year-old actor was the top trending topic in India. It appears like heartbroken fans were looking to find the missing link and staying updated on all the controversies it brought along.
The 'Raabta' star was found dead in his Bandra apartment on June 14, and no suicide note was left behind. "Interest for the late actor spiked sharply on 14 June to reach an all time high, nationally," the Google statement said.
While the coronavirus-centric searches over the month dropped massively from May, but volumes remain more than double that of February. Over the past month, Goa searched the most about the deadly virus, followed by Delhi and Chandigarh. The top trending coronavirus searches have been about 'coronavirus news' and 'vaccine for coronavirus latest update'.
Netizens also sought answers to COVID-19 related questions on Google in India like 'Which mask is best for coronavirus?', 'Is corona virus weakening?', 'When (will) vaccine for coronavirus (come) in India?', and 'Will the coronavirus ever end?', among other queries.
"Related searches for vaccines remained elevated at more than five times the usual monthly thresholds, after reaching a record monthly peak in May," the trend report said. 'Patanjali corona medicine', 'Global vaccine summit' and 'Dexamethasone' were all breakout vaccine-related searches in June.
Other overall trending topics included the solar eclipse and Father's Day.
