Modi, Biden discuss ways to boost India-US ties

    Synopsis

Although both Biden and Modi referred to the humanitarian situation in Ukraine in their opening remarks, and the PM recalled his suggestion to Russian President Vladimir Putin to hold a direct dialogue with the Ukrainian President, the subsequent closed-door meet did not witness any significant discussion on the Russia-Ukraine war or any difference of opinion on Russia.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden discussed ways to enhance India-US relationship across sectors and exchanged views on global issues including the Russia-Ukraine situation at a virtual summit on Monday, with PM Modi emphasising on dialogue as the way forward to resolving the crisis.
"The two leaders had an extensive exchange of views on several regional and global issues, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, global economic recovery, climate action, recent developments in South Asia and the Indo-Pacific region, and the situation in Ukraine," said a statement released by India after the summit, which was held ahead of the so-called 2+2 meeting of the foreign and defence ministers of the two sides. "They also took stock of the significant progress made in bilateral relations in recent years." Modi and Biden agreed that strengthening of the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership would be of tremendous benefit to the two countries and would also contribute to global peace, prosperity and stability, said the statement.

Defence minister Rajnath Singh and external affairs minister S Jaishankar were also present during the interaction.

    Security Challenges
Singh and Jaishankar are in Washington DC for the 2+2 ministerial dialogue. Their US counterparts, secretary of defence Lloyd Austin and secretary of state Antony Blinken, were also there during the interaction at the White House.

Although both Biden and Modi referred to the humanitarian situation in Ukraine in their opening remarks, and the PM recalled his suggestion to Russian President Vladimir Putin to hold a direct dialogue with the Ukrainian President, the subsequent closed-door meet did not witness any significant discussion on the Russia-Ukraine war or any difference of opinion on Russia, said people aware of the matter.

In his opening remarks, PM Modi, while condemning the civilian killings in Bucha in Ukraine, called for an impartial probe into the incident.

"We have sent medicines and other relief material to Ukraine and other neighbouring nations," said.
