    India emerges as the fastest growing country in the world by open source contribution

    India is now home to its third-largest community of developers, online coding platform Github said, a little over a year after the company officially launched operations.

    The number of contributions on the platform, such as issues and team discussions, increased by 75% in India compared to about 40% for the rest of the world over the past year.

    In public repositories, the number of contributors increased by 80% over the previous year and over 1 million developers created their first repository on GitHub in India, making it the fastest growing country in the world, in terms of developers contributing to open source.

    “India has become an innovation powerhouse, with open-source software development at the core. The growth in activity and engagement shows how powerful and invested India’s software development has become. Indian developers are truly building the future of software and the country is uniquely positioned to continue to drive innovation that accelerates human progress,” said Maneesh Sharma, Country Manager, GitHub India.

    GitHub also announced a partnership with the Nasscom FutureSkills programme.

    GitHub will extend its GitHub Campus Program and Student Developer Pack to students, educators and institutes that are a part of Nasscom’s university initiatives.

    Startups participating in Nasscom’s incubator programmes will also be able to access the GitHub Accelerate programme.

    The company on Friday announced the launch of three new programmes for India, GitHub Open Source Grants, GitHub Externships, and GitHub Accelerate.

    With the Covid-19 pandemic accelerating digital transformation initiatives, the adoption of GitHub Enterprise by businesses based in India has tripled. Infosys, Cognizant, InMobi, Udaan, ShareChat, Capillary Technologies and Swiggy are some of the companies that are using GitHub to collaborate and build software.

    GitHub has also announced the GitHub Open Source Grants for India, where it will offer a total of Rs 1 crore to support open source projects driving innovation across India.

    India is also home to one of the largest communities of student developers in the world.

    In 2020, GitHub saw the number of students participating in the GitHub Campus programme increase by 142%, it said.

    Over 100,000 students signed up to GitHub Student Developer Pack, and the company has now launched GitHub Externships which will help connect allow students to engage with companies in India, via fellowship programmes.
