    Online link to check PAN-Aadhaar linking status is down for many; will govt extend PAN-Aadhaar linking deadline?

    As the deadline for linking Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar approaches, many people are checking their Aadhaar-PAN linking status on the income tax e-filing portal.

    As the deadline to link Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar nears, several people are logging onto the income tax e-filing portal – incometax.gov.in to check their Aadhaar-PAN linking status. Many users, however, have taken to social media and complained that the link to check the Aadhaar-PAN status is not working for them on March 28, 2023.

    An user wrote on Twitter at 10.58 am on Tuesday, "Unable to connect the site to check status nor to link."


    To this, the Income Tax department replied, "We have flagged the issue to the @Infosys team concerned for resolution. They are looking into this."


    Another user wrote on Twitter at 11.48 am on March 28, 2023, "@IncomeTaxIndia Pan aadhaar Link..... service Unavailable."




    The last date to link PAN with Aadhaar is March 31, 2023. As per guidelines, if you fail to link your PAN with your Aadhaar by March 31, 2023, then your PAN will become inoperative.

    'Extend the deadline to link PAN with Aadhaar'
    Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Tuesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to extend the deadline by six months for linking PAN card with Aadhaar and removing the Rs 1000 fee.

    "I further request that a maximum number of Indians do live in extremely remote corners of the country where internet facilities are rarely available...And unscrupulous touts have started extorting money as fees from these innocent citizens of rural India," Chowdhury said and urged the Centre to direct post offices to assist the people free of cost.

    "In this regard, I earnestly request you to instruct the Ministry of Finance, Department of Revenue, to empower all Local and Sub Post Offices to help people to get their pan card linked with their Aadhaar card free of cost as well as extend the deadline till next six months," the Congress leader said in his letter.


    Will the government extend the PAN-Aadhaar linking deadline?
    According to officials, the government is likely to extend the deadline for linking the permanent account number with Aadhaar by another two to three months, according to the Economic Times report.

    A government official with knowledge of the situation told ET that the Central Board of Direct Taxes may publish a notification soon.

    PAN-Aadhaar penalty
    Up to March 31, 2023, there is a Rs 1000 fine for failing to link a PAN with an Aadhaar; however, after that date, unlinked PANs would become inoperative.
